Sticks and Stones

Sticks and Stones

The saying: "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me," is a good goal, but however strong you may be, words can cut like a knife. With the above attitude, you can heal much faster, but the sting is there. Words are powerful. Again, thanks to my FB friend, Leah Weber King, here is a quote to remember:

“If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn. If a child lives with hostility, he learns to fight. If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy. If a child learns to feel shame, he learns to feel guilty.

"If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient. If a child lives with encouragement, he learns confidence. If a child lives with praise, he learns to appreciate. If a child lives with fairness, he learns justice. If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith. If a child lives with approval, he learns to like himself. If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he learns to find love in the world.” Dorothy Law Neite

Unfortunately, I grew up with the criticism, hostility, ridicule and shame. I try not to condemn, fight, feel guilty. Sometimes I succeed; sometimes I fail. I was never shy per se, but became guarded, mistrustful and unworthy. It took many, many years to learn self-worth and build self-esteem.

As the hurtful words slip through in my mind, I reflect strongly as to what I could possibly have done to bring about such treatment (the memories began when I was 4-years-old), but I cannot think of a single crime. All I remember is trying to be invisible. I don't wish this on anyone.

I purposely treated my children differently. Thanked them every day for making me their mother. Balancing discipline with all those things offered above to encourage spiritual and mental health. My one regret is that I yelled and still do when I'm angry. This I am working on--hard!

The lesson here is self-awareness. Treat children the way you wish you were treated as a child. You will all be better for it.
